John was a long-distance runner. He ran full and half marathons, triathlons and trail races, building on the tenacity and courage that defined all aspects of his life. He loved sprinting through the forest, down a hillside in the snow with his dogs, his '80s playlist in his ears, leaving the world behind, yet becoming more attuned to everything around him. After a family vacation out west when he was 9, he was mesmerized by the Tetons, and vowed to live in the mountains someday.
A family slideshow would include John digging in the huge dirt pile behind his family's house in Kokomo, and him shooting hoops with his father and friends. Due to district changes, John graduated from Kokomo High School in 1985, but he was a Haworth Husky through and through (hence the name of one of his new husky puppies). In high school, John played football and tennis, and served on the yearbook staff. He went on to study architecture at Ball State University, but realized engineering was a better fit, transferred to Purdue, and graduated with a BS in civil engineering in 1990. Upon moving to Colorado in 1997, John joined Peak Engineering, where he worked for 25 years, and where his integrity, insight and determination led him to become majority owner and president. John cared about his employees and the long-term success of his company. He was highly regarded in his field; he served on the national committees for the American Concrete Institute and the Tilt-Up Concrete Association, he was honored as a fellow of TCA, receiving their David L. Kelly Distinguished Engineer Award and received an Alumni Achievement award from Purdue University Lyles School of Civil Engineering. John was licensed as an engineer in 32 states.
Incredibly competitive, John returned to tennis as an adult, trash-talking and socializing in doubles matches. He loved to travel, taste whiskey, tour art museums and meet new people. He was incredibly loyal; he never lost or let go of a friend.
